MS Paint was my creative outlet for many years.

Music is a really great creative tool for me, for different roles.

Music is obviously our No. 1, always. But it’s so fun to venture out to another creative outlet.

Music is one of the last elements in the creative process. It can and hopefully should tie a bow around an artistic concept, how a story moves forward, the pace of that storytelling.

Music is very nebulous, and you can conjure up a lot of moods with music. But lyrics – they’re a lot more tangible. They’re much more specific. And you want to say something meaningful and creative and artistic and that tells a story and that takes people someplace else.

Music reflects the time that it’s being made in, and so certainly, the music that’s being made in 1986 by a 14-year-old kid will reflect some magic of 1986 for him if he’s an inspired and creative musician.

Music video directors, who conceive, write and direct these works, enjoy no creative rights, receive no ongoing financial benefit from the sale of our work, and many times are not even credited.

My approach to directing is to not do very much directing. I’m mainly interested in what the creative group individually and together are thinking.

My aunt made stuff; my mom was creative, so I was surrounded by that. When I moved to England, it was ’75, and everything was happening. My whole teenage life is England, glam rock and David Bowie and Sex Pistols and Iggy Pop, all that stuff.

My creative is for the world.

My creative juices flow seasonally.

My creative partner is a writer, and he’s got an executive producing credit on this film. We’ve made three films together and I would never underestimate the impact of a writer.

My creative process involves that old saying: It’s 90% perspiration and only 10% inspiration.

My creative process is a bit manic at times, to be honest. I wake up Monday and Thursday stressed because I don’t have a video. I usually – with the exception of maybe a handful of videos – wake up, write the video, shoot the video, edit the video, release the video all in the same day.

My creative process is quite slow. I hear melodies in my head while I’m washing the dishes and I allow my subconscious to do the work.

My creative team filters the scripts before they reach me and a few others. We evaluate them, ponder over the budget, and think of various possibilities to get the viewer excited.

My experience is in merging extraordinary creative content with innovative global commerce.

My experiences in the military, the private sector, and as a congressional staffer were at times almost enough to drive me crazy. Writing offered the all-too-often-cited creative outlet.

My first experience with the creative was mopping tar. If you let the tar sit, it can get cold pretty quickly. And because the mops are so heavy, you’ve got to dip it and then ride it really fast.

My first introduction to television, and really just the business in general, was working with David Lynch, with his incredibly open, creative mind that was not following any rules. I didn’t know it, because I hadn’t been in the business.

My last album as J. Tillman, ‘Singing Ax,’ that was really a premeditated death rattle of the aesthetic precedent I had set. I realized I wasn’t creating spontaneously; I was enforcing all these parameters. I was too self-loathing or something, and there was this obvious dissonance between my conversational voice and creative voice.

My life has been going in ways I never could have dreamed of – doing the closing celebration for the Olympic Games and being appointed the creative chair for jazz at the L.A. Philharmonic. So I’ve just decided I’ll go with my flow and be very prepared.

My process is pretty messy, and there’s a lot of creative destruction in it. When I set out to write something, I’ll write some passages from it just to figure out who these characters are, how they talk. And I have a dim sense of what it’s about and where it’s going to go, but I know that’s going to change, too.

My real self is probably more creative and more frightening than any sort of drink or drug-induced state.

Novelists are not equipped to make a movie, in my opinion. They make their own movie when they write: they’re casting, they’re dressing the scene, they’re working out where the energy of the scene is coming from and they’re also relying tremendously on the creative imagination of the reader.
